District 19 Holds Successful
Identity Theft Forum |
|
| On Thursday April
12, 2007 at Leisure World, the District 19 Democratic Club sponsored a forum on
identity theft in conjunction with
the Leisure World Democratic Club. Approximately 40 individuals were in
attendance. The guest speaker was Montgomery County First
Assistant State’s
Attorney Carol Crawford. She is an expert in white collar crime prosecutions
and she has lectured extensively on the subject. She gave a very informative
and interesting presentation about the ever growing problem of identity theft. Ms. Crawford’s presentation modalities
included slides, video and dissemination of printed materials. There was
extensive audience participation with many questions.
Ms. Crawford’s discussion included the
numerous ways that identity theft can be perpetrated upon the unsuspecting.
Among the areas discussed was phishing
- when thieves send genuine looking e-mails in order to induce a person to
provide a bank account number, routing number, date of birth and/or social
security number. This is done in order to steal a person’s identity and the
contents of his/her bank account.
Another common identity theft scam discussed was check washing-
where thieves get a hold of your mail and get checks altered and made out to
them. Another scam noted was skimming
which is when someone, often a retailer, uses a small black box that can steal
all of the information from your credit card with a single swipe.
Ms. Crawford
highlighted the need for vigilance in ones financial affairs, including
shredding financial documents, monitoring visitors and periodically obtaining a
credit report. Contact information, and useful references and information were
provided in the printed materials. This included how to identify when you are a
victim, how to report identity theft crimes,
and reference to some ongoing initiatives to address the growing problems
associated with identity theft. |

Tribute To Former Delegates Petzold and Mandel |
Former Delegates Carol Petzold and Adrienne Mandel recently
were honored by the District 19 Democratic Club for their service in the
Maryland General Assembly and their contributions to the Montgomery County
community. The event took place on April 12 at Leisure World during a Forum on
Identity Theft jointly sponsored by the District 19 and Leisure World
Democratic Clubs.
Former
State Senator Leonard
Teitelbaum presided over the ceremony, noting that he had the privilege of
working with both of the former legislators. He presented each with a special
gift card on behalf of the District 19 Club.
During her two
decades in the House of Delegates, Carol Petzold served on the Judiciary
Committee and was the Chair of the Subcommittee on Criminal Justice. Always an
advocate for women, she championed legislation on domestic violence, sexual
abuse, and fair housing. From educating homeless children to providing
protection from identity theft, Carol worked tirelessly on countless measures
to improve the quality of life of her constituents. Among her many leadership
roles, she was President of the Women’s Legislative Network of the
National Conference of State Legislators(NCSL) and Chair of NCSL's
Transportation Committee.
First elected to the
Maryland House of Delegates in 1995, Adrienne Mandel was a member of the Joint
Committee on Children, Youth, and Families and was the Chair of the Joint
Committee on Health Care Delivery and Financing. Widely known and respected for
her efforts on behalf of women, children, and the elderly, she sponsored
